  3.     As a result of the Supreme Court's decision absolving
  4. states of responsibility in child-abuse cases (LAW, March 6),
  5. the American "justice" system has abandoned battered children
  6. to their fate. To clear the Winnebago County social services
  7. department in Wisconsin of charges of inaction is a moral
  8. outrage. Who in America will now speak for the voiceless and
  9. powerless children?

  13.     The most appalling part of this story is that the social
  14. services department had evidence of nearly two years of child
  15. abuse and yet failed to help. Why do we hold bars and
  16. restaurants responsible for serving liquor to noticeably
  17. intoxicated customers, and yet not make accountable those who
  18. are in charge of a child's life?

  22.     As Americans, we are guaranteed the opportunity to life,
  23. liberty and the pursuit of happiness. One of the purposes of
  24. our government, be it local or federal, is to preserve these
  25. rights. There is no other authority that can protect a
  26. four-year-old when a parent becomes abusive.
